Eating healthy in pregnancy Bookmark and Share

You're pregnant! This is a thrilling time that can also be a tiny bit scary. Having a baby means so much more than just carrying around some extra weight for the next 9 months. That new life growing inside you will depend on you for everything it needs, to be healthy and strong, before and after he or she is born.

Eating healthy

Good nutrition helps a woman's body prepare for motherhood. The complex processes that occur during pregnancy require a rich supply of protein, vitamins and minerals for both mother and child.

Do I eat for two?

Sameera was giddy with laughter when she told her family that she was pregnant. There were smiles and an occasional tear of happiness as the news sank in. Her mother exclaimed, “You will have to eat a lot now! Your baby must be healthy.”

Do you really need to eat for two? Not really. The growing fetus doesn’t ‘eat’ the food! It only absorbs the essential nutrients it requires, from the blood circulating through the placenta.

Getting an early start

If you are planning a pregnancy, it would be a good idea to start taking folic acid. This vitamin prevents you from having a baby with certain spinal defects. Folic acid occurs naturally in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits or dried lentils. In addition, your doctor will prescribe you a folic acid supplement. It is recommended to be on this at least 1-3 months before you get pregnant and to continue it for the first 3 months of the pregnancy.
