Meet Dr. Gita Arjun!

Dr. Gita Arjun is a graduate of the Madras Medical College. She did her Residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St Francis Hospital, Evanston, USA from 1976 - 1980. She is a Diplomate, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Gita Arjun currently is the Director and Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at E.V.Kalyani Medical Centre, Chennai, India, which is is celebrating its 60th year as an institution dedicated to women's health.

Soon after completing her training in obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr. Gita Arjun and her husband, Dr Arjun Rajagopalan, chose to return to India so they could share the knowledge they had access to, during their studies in the USA. Despite odds, she has determinedly worked towards setting higher and higher standards of medical practice, inspiring, through example, all those who work with her. Functioning in a system that is not always ethical, she seems to stay on course by drawing from deep within herself, by knowing and acknowledging a core within her that is passionately concerned with human care.

Always interested in women's health issues, she has focused on promoting women's awareness of health and wellness. She has started the "Passport to Health" program to inspire women to pay attention to their health. The program stresses the maintenance of good health and a healthy lifestyle by providing an individualised "Health Horoscope" for each woman who takes part in the program.

She has been writing a column on women's health issues called 'Women and Wellness' in The Hindu for the past 5 years. She is also a regular contributor to the Kumudam group of Tamil magazines, thereby reaching a large number of women readers.

She has now written "The Passport to a Healthy Pregnancy' to fill the lacuna in India, of a pregnancy book written by an Indian obstetrician for Indian women.

She is married to Dr Arjun Rajagopalan, Medical Director and Head of the Department of Surgery, Sundaram Medical Foundation, Chennai. Her son, Ashvin, is a jewellery designer who is also an art promoter in Chennai, running Ashvita Art Objects and Artifacts and the popular Ashvita restaurant. Sruti, her daughter-in-law, is an assistant director and also helps in the successful running of Ashvita. Kavita, her daughter, has majored in International Studies at UNC- Chapel Hill, USA and has a Masters in International Education Policy from Harvard. She is working for an educational NGO (Teach for India).

Dr Gita Arjun believes that focus and passion are the two keywords for success - be it in love, life or your chosen path.
